Unfortunately, it’s clear that Cold Symmetry had neither the experience nor resources to properly execute their own ideas.Īs is mandated by Soulslike law, Mortal Shell puts you in the shoes of an unknown blank slate protagonist as he ventures forth into a mysterious hostile world with only the vaguest of objectives. There are plenty of bits and pieces of Mortal Shell that are genuinely brilliant. To their credit, Cold Symmetry did try out some new things. Mortal Shell is nowhere near attacking, let alone dethroning God. Is Mortal Shell here to dethrone a God, or is it simply future #7 on the list of, “Dark Souls Clones You Never Knew Existed”? However, most of these games will simply be lost in the swarm, their only lasting legacy to populate click-bait “listacles.” While many have tried, none have yet taken the Soulslike crown from From Software. Hell, even if the game doesn’t take the coveted top spot, there’s still plenty of money to be made from the millions of fans looking to try something new. Fortnitetook the crown from PUGB, which in turn had taken it from DayZ. Developers dream is that their game will be one of the rare few that become the new dominant force in the kingdom. It’s a smart move, as this earth is simply littered with cash dollars that hungry supplicants are willing to give in tribute to whatever cult promises them shiny new content. So, what's your take? And while it may not be as mechanically strict or overwhelming as Mortal Shell, there is still a whole lot of meat to be found in and around the Ragnarök period. ![]() And what's more, it's also one of the best exclusives on PlayStation, which alone makes it well worth the price tag. If you're more inclined to play games that cater to both puzzles and in-your-face combat, then God of War is an absolute essential purchase. Even still, if you're up for the fight, then look no further. Attaining such a monument feat won't come easy, mind you, what with most of Japan having just about every tool at its disposal. With the Ashima Empire on the verge of collapse under the pressure of its enemies, you must stand tall as one of Japan's remaining bastions of hope-a warrior that relies on traditions, but also has the power to shape a new future by the sword. In Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, you fill the shoes of a shinobi warrior named Wolf, whose sole purpose is to protect a young lord who was ultimately cast out and left for dead. Dig a little deeper, though, and you'll find a whole lot more than flashy mechanics and next-level AI. At its heart, it's a relentlessly difficult action game that favors mostly close-quarters melee combat, a lot of which features brutally tough armored enemies and advanced gameplay mechanics. Another FromSoftware favorite that dabbles in all the same elements as Mortal Shell is Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, a samurai-themed Soulslike that goes all out to make its world equally, if not slightly more immersive than the vast majority of generic Souls lookalikes.
